Assistant professor Xiao Liu has been named the 2023-2024 recipient of the John L. Imhoff Chair in Industrial Engineering. This title was established in 1983 to honor the memory of John L. Imhoff, founding head of the University of Arkansas Department of Industrial Engineering.

Liu joined the faculty in 2017 coming from the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. He received his doctorate in industrial engineering from the National University of Singapore and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in China.

Liu’s research interests include physics-informed and domain-aware data-driven methodologies for engineering applications. He focuses on engineering probability and statistics, spatio-temporal modeling, big data analytics and various engineering-knowledge-based data-driven methodologies in broad areas such as quality and reliability, manufacturing yield prediction, preventive maintenance, urban air quality modeling and extreme weather events prediction.

In 2022, he received an NSF CAREER Award for his research entitled “Domain-Aware Statistical Learning,” which will contribute to the advancement of national competitiveness by transforming how governing physics and engineering domain knowledge is integrated into data-driven models for high-stakes applications. He was also the recipient of the 2022 University of Arkansas College of Engineering Rising Star Award.
